What if the spoken word became physical?
Plato’s Symposium is a fictional dialogue that has been passed down to us for generations. The ancient philosopher imagined a feast in which his teacher Socrates and other Greek scholars took part and dedicated their speeches to Eros. By reflecting on love’s various facets, they examine its nature and the pursuit of knowledge. Rather than a simple desire, love is perceived as a powerful attraction of body and mind that, when achieved and understood, leads to true wisdom.
Inspired by this night of speeches, the exhibition draws on those discussions but turns words into artistic expression. The participating artists form a symposium that consists of contributions that focus on subjective experiences with, expectations of, and beliefs in love. Instead of the idea that there is only one true meaning of love, the artworks together form a set of tangible metaphors that open up a more fluid cognition of the wor(l)d.
